Jerry Cantrell on Potential New Solo Material, Alice In Chains’ Odds of Getting into the Rock Hall
Alice in Chains will be wrapping up North American tour dates in support of their latest album, Rainier Fog, next month. The following month, singer William DuVall will release his solo album, One Alone. Could this mean Jerry Cantrell will start working on new solo material, too?
That question was posed to the guitarist when he appeared on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown, and he had this to say:
“I’m always working on stuff. It’s just kind of what I do. I enjoy making music and messing around with it. I’ve done a couple of soundtrack things over the past couple of years with my good friend, Tyler Bates, who does a lot of really great soundtracks. I did one for ‘John Wick 2,’ a song called ‘A Job To Do.’ Who knows…I’m a guy that pretty much focuses on what I’m doing at the time. I’ve done a couple of solo records before. You could see me doing something like that if I have time, because when it’s Alice time, that’s what time it is. We may take a little time [off] here. I know Will’s got stuff that he’s going to put out and do some shows.”
The question of whether of not AIC would ever land in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also came up. Cantrell is optimistic, but he’s also not counting his chickens before they hatch:
“It would be cool to be included in that, and who knows? Maybe one day that’ll happen. It’s not necessarily anything that you need. We’ve got everything that we need, and we’ve been really lucky to achieve a lot of our goals. [The Rock Hall] was never really one of them, and it’s really not up to us. And there’s so many other deserving bands who aren’t in there as well that are from a generation or two or three back. It’s a limited amount of people that get in every year.”
