When Metal Meets Yoga
BERLIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 13: Fans give the 'Devil's Horns' as Kreator performs during the fifth Metal Hammer Awards at Kesselhaus on September 13, 2013 in Berlin, Germany. The annual prizes are given by Metal Hammer, a German music magazine specialized in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock.; SHANGHAI, CHINA - JUNE 21: (CHINA OUT) Nearly 500 yoga enthusiasts perform yoga under the guidance of Indian yoga instructors at Jing'an Park to welcome the International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2016 in Shanghai, China. Proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the International Day of Yoga is set on June 21 each year.
Today (June 21) is International Yoga Day, and before you knock traditional yoga, perhaps you should check out Black Yoga.
Black Yoga was founded by Kimee Massie, with the help of her husband Scott, to provide an alternative for those who “get bored with the sound of birds and waterfalls,” according to an interview Kimee gave to The Village Voice. Featuring varying metal styles from industrial to drone, Black Yoga is a showcase of all things metal from the music that’s played, to the tattooed instructors, to the literal darkness the class is taught under.
Intrigued? Check out the preview video below! A Black Yoga DVD is currently available at the class’ official website, along with a CD of the music used during the class if you would prefer to create your own workout.
