My last time watching hockey at the Joe Louis Arena.

Happy Birthday Detroit! I thought I’d post some of my favorite events that I’ve seen in Detroit proper. There’s many, many more, but here are some of the biggest ones.

  • KISS - tiger stadium June 28, 1996

The first major concert I went to after coming to the D. It did not disappoint!

  • Metallica at Comerica Park July 12, 2017

The weather was terrible earlier in the day. Opening band, Volbeat played a full set, while Avenged Sevenfold had their set cut short to try to give Metallica a full set before bad weather returned. That never happened, and the ‘Tallica boys played a full set.

  • kid rock - comerica park august 12/13, 2011

Speaking of bad weather, that second night had a nasty storm blow through, cutting Sammy Hagar’s set short. Rock played a full set for the sold out crowd. My Saturday ended Sunday morning at 7am when I left the Motor City Casino Hotel room of Mike Binder, with Rock and Dave Coulier still in there. That’s a story for another time.

Thousands welcome Kid Rock back to Detroit at first Comerica Park show (with photo gallery)

Kid Rock paid tribute to "the true spirit of Detroit" in front of thousands of energetic fans Friday night at the first of two Comerica Park shows, a signal of not only the rocker's longevity but also the city's resurgence.

  • metallica - orion Fest on belle isle june 2013

What a great weekend! Getting on and off the island wasn’t great, but once you were there it was a blast!

  • the super bowl 2006

The Steelers defeated the Seahawks by the score of 21–10, in a game that almost seemed like the powers that be wanted the Steelers to win. Anyways, Kid Rock played the night before at the Joe. The Red Wings played earlier that day in Colorado and flew in. I hung with the guys in the alumni room after the show for a bit. The show in which Bob Seger joined Rock on stage. After, we made our way to Chris Chelios’ new bar, which wasn’t open yet. Because of the traffic and all the people downtown, it took me an hour and a half to get across town to Cheli’s.

When the Super Bowl came to Detroit

Detroit shone in the spotlight on Feb. 5, 2006 as the city played host to Super Bowl XL at Ford Field

  • The Last Hockey Game I Saw At The Joe

While I didn’t get to the final game, I did get to see the second last home game. I took my daughter. I still have to framed picture of her and I in front of the stairway. Great memories at that place!

  • the opening of little caesars arena

I just walked by a picture of a very young Greta Van Fleet and myself after one of the Kid Rock shows as he opened the new arena.  Outside of those six shows, which I saw all or part of each one, there’s been other concerts and hockey games I’ve attended there. It might not have to history of the Joe yet, but I like the place.

  • indy car races on belle isle

I used to broadcast on the “Free Prix Friday” on the island. Always fun to get a sneak peek at what the rest of the weekend was going to bring. One weekend the guys from Three Doors Down played. Unfortunately, it rained and only a few hundred people got to see their set. Still a great memory though.
