Happy Birthday to the legendary Roger Daltrey. As you read in the title of this post, him and his band, The Who, played a small part in my first concert. This memory was jarred this morning while I was doing a rock ride on my Peloton with my girl, Kendal Toole. I’ll write about her sometime. 😉
It was January 28, 1984. Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue and a newer band called Waysted, were on that infamous tour. You know, the one where Ozzy allegedly snorted ants off the sidewalk. Anyway, I was so fired up to go to my first ever concert, as a VERY young man. LOL I recall being in a smoke filled auditorium – you could smoke inside back then – as the fans starting to fill the seats, music played on the speakers.
My anticipation level was on high! This was my introduction to the world I’d make my life for decades to come. As the songs played, The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” come over the sound system. “Out here in the fields..I fight for my meals…I get my back into my living.” The song was slowly getting louder. “Don’t cry…Don’t raise your eye…It’s only teenage wasteland.” Then, the moment came. The first live rock band I’d ever see on stage. “Teenage wasteland…It’s only teenage wasteland….Teenage wasteland…Oh, yeah…Its only teenage wasteland…They’re all…” and just at that time, the music cut, the place went dark, and a loud voiced announcer screamed “WASTED!!!!” Waysted took the stage and the show started. I haven’t been the same since.
What was your first concert experience like?
