It’s funny that a story about Rick Rubin picking Paul McCartney as the #1 bass player recently came out. I was thinking of asking some of my rock star friends about their top 5 bass lines in songs, so this works out perfectly.

As for what you guys said? I was surprised by how many of you doubted Sir Paul’s playing. IMO, he plays the right notes and doesn’t overdo it. Yes, Sheehan, Claypool, Lee, Burton, Harris, and on and on, are all monster players. All of them bring incredible skill to the instrument. There’s just something about McCartney’s playing, and more importantly his songwriting that makes him the best. As I write this, “A Little Help From My Friends” is on the turntable. The bass sticks out, but is not overdone. Perfect!

Here’s four guys who have over a century of experience playing bass. I asked them to pick five of the best bass lines. Here’s what they came up with.

  • Rudy Sarzo - Quiet Riot/Ozzy/Whitesnake

The legendary bassist was nice enough to tell me five of his favorite bass lines after a recent interview. If anyone should know, he should!

    Here’s what he said….

    The Beatles – Something

King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man

Yes – Close To The Edge

Led Zeppelin – Good Times, Bad Times

Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower

  • David Ellefson - Megadeth and many other projects

David is one of my go-to friends when it comes to this kind of thing. He responded quickly with five gems.

    KISS – Detroit Rock City

    Iron Maiden – Wrathchild

    Ozzy – I Don’t Know

    Rush – Free Will

Paul McCartney/Wings – Silly Little Love Songs

  • JD - Black Label Society

JD is one of my favorite people, and an AWESOME bass player. Here’s the list he gave me….

Led – Zeppelin – Ramble On

    The Jacksons – Darling Dear

    Iron Maiden – Innocent Exile

    Black Sabbath – N.I.B.

Jaco Pastorius – Come On, Come Over

  • Frank Bello - Anthrax

Frank is the man, and a great player as well! Here’s what he picked.

    Rush – Freewill

Iron Maiden – Number Of The Beast

Black Sabbath – Heaven And Hell

    Jackson 5 – I Want You Back

    Stevie Wonder – I Wish
