This isn’t new information, I am NOT a fan of horror movies or the “spooky season.” I always make that joke that I’m afraid of the dark, but that’s not entirely true. In all honesty, there are 2 main reasons I don’t like scary movies.

  1. I don’t like guts and gross things like that. I know it’s fake, but it’s not for me. That’s why I couldn’t go into the medical field. Guts are not for me.
  2. They infiltrate my dreams. Not a joke. I’m a very vivid dreamer and have actually had lucid dreams. The truth is, I can’t even watch C.S.I. before bed, because I end up dreaming about whatever the episode was about. Insert that ding-dong from ‘Saw’ and I’m sleeping with the lights on while gripping Mr. Bear for dear life.

All that being said, I have seen my fair share of horror movies and there are a couple that stand out as ones that legit gave me nightmares. And not even as a child. As a grown ass adult. I’m not proud of it. Either way, here are the movies that gave me nightmares:

  • The Ring

I remember watching this movie in theaters when I was in the 8th or 9th grade with my friends. I knew I wasn’t going to like it. I knew I was going to be scared out of my mind. I didn’t want to be lame and not go to the movies with my friends because I was afraid so I went. And I had nightmares for 2 MONTHS! Not a joke. My mom was kinda pissed. She was like, “why did you go see this movie?” Once I got over the nightmares, I did something very stupid. I went and saw it again. Why? Because I’m an idiot. I had nightmares for another month after that. Honestly, I don’t remember the full plot other than watch the video, die in 7 days. I think the girl coming out of the well with all the hair in her face was what really did it for me. Re-watching this trailer gave me anxiety.

  • The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Pretty sure I wasn’t even able to finish watching this one. In fact, I couldn’t finish watching this trailer. When the dudes eyes go all black… NOPE! I do remember the moment I couldn’t continue watching it though. It was when the girl is on the floor and her body is all contorted. Scared the sh*t out of me. Add in the fact that this is supposed to be “based on a true story?” GTFO.

  • The Blair Witch Project

This movie came out when I was only 12 years old and was one of the first movies that made me realize the horror genre was not for me. I remember as a family we rented the movie (upon my brothers request) and my mom just kept telling me it wasn’t real. This was when I realized as I tried to go to bed that when I closed my eyes I would see scenes from the movie. Not great for a 12 year old trying to go to bed. I didn’t sleep that night and probably for a few more nights after that. The snot scene didn’t help either.

  • Hostel

I freakin’ HATED this movie. As a matter of fact, I still do. To be completely honest, I’ve never seen the full thing. Here’s how I ended up kinda watching it. I was 19 or 20 hanging out with some friends at a friends house. They decided this was the movie we would watch against my protest. They all sat on the couch facing the TV and I sat in a chair off to the side and looked out the window behind them. I could still hear everything that was happening which almost made it worse. Every now and then I’d turn around and see some sh*t I didn’t like and quickly turn back towards the window. The truth is, this movie is way too real life for me. Not into watching people get tortured and what not. Another one I can’t even watch the trailer as I write this.

  • The SAW Series

Alright, I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen any of the SAW movies. I don’t need to. This has everything I know I’m afraid of. Gory grossness, people getting tortured and images that’ll inevitably show up in my dreams. Thanks, but no thanks. When the first SAW movie came out once again, as a family, my brother picked it as his rental choice. My parents and him sat in the living room to watch it and I sat in my room until it was over. Do I want to play a game? Not with you, Jigsaw. Not today.
