Welcome to the 100th edition of Radio Chatter. Its not exactly what I had in mind. Like a lot of rock fans, I awoke this morning to the news of Chris Cornell’s passing. Not just that, but in our city after a show in “Detroit Rock City” as he had posted on Twitter before the show last night. As many that have come before him, he and Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen, seemed to embrace the city and it’s rough around the edges rock attitude on stage last night. There was no shortage of shout-outs to Detroit. No one knew that it would be the last time Soundgarden would play a show together in its familiar form.
Anyone who knows me knows I’m a big Soundgarden fan. As I mention in the interview, I’ll never forget playing “Outshined” for the first time. It blew me away with its thickness. Chris talks about that in a funny moment in our talk.
This interview is from the Spring of 2014. They were about to release an anniversary edition of “Superunknown” and get out on the road with Nine Inch Nails. We talked about those 2 things, Black Sabbath (at the time there was a possibility that Sabbath was going to call it quits then) the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and more. I had never interviewed Chris before this and I found him thoughtful and engaged in the conversation. If you’re a Soundgarden fan, go back and check out my interview with Kim Thayil from last Fall. One of my favorites from 2016.
You can see the story about Chris’s passing right here.
