The old Berkley Theatre on 12 Mile Road sits between Wakefield Road and Robina Avenue. Glenn Wilhelm purchased it last year. He owns the Roxy in Rochester and has big plans.

Wilhelm is pouring $4 million into the project. Renovations started months ago.

The space will fit 880 people when doors open. Dueling piano shows will pack the house. Comedy acts, live bands, and touring performers will also take the stage. Wilhelm is adding bar areas and a restaurant alongside the performance space, while the lobby will honor the original theater.

The Berkley Theatre operated for five decades before shutting down in 1993. After that, a Rite Aid store moved in. Several businesses cycled through over the years. The building sat vacant recently.

"We fell in love with the building, the marquee is beautiful, and the community," said Wilhelm to WXYZ.

Demolition wrapped up weeks ago. Construction crews are making progress. Wilhelm confirmed the shell is done, and finishing work has begun.

Berkley Mayor Bridget Dean praised the project. She expects more foot traffic downtown. The venue will draw visitors who've never seen Berkley or give them a reason to come back.

Dave Sears grew up in Berkley. He remembers the original theater. "It was a super cool venue. It was really old school," said Sears to WXYZ.

Kelly Pettibone owns Naka and supports the development. "I'm excited to see that space not sitting empty, to see something happening there that's good for the community. I think everybody's going to love it," said Pettibone.

Doors should open late April or early May.
