Music fans worldwide flocked to screens as Detroit's premier jazz event drew 1.5 million streaming watchers. The Labor Day weekend shows pulled in viewers from 43 countries - a striking 30% rise from last year.
Streets buzzed with life as over 300,000 people filled downtown and midtown spots. Musicians lit up four stages with close to 50 shows. First-time watchers tuned in from Cuba, Greece, and Croatia, while dedicated fans from Asia to Ukraine kept their screens glued to the action.
"This year was truly remarkable and one of the most successful jazz festivals in our 46-year history," said Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director, per the Detroit Free Press. "We are so thankful to our sponsors, donors and grantors for their continued support of our ongoing mission of propagating transformative, inspiring and uplifting free jazz in Detroit and around the world."
Better tech meant more music for all. The upgraded streaming system pushed out 30,000 hours of content through the web, social channels, Detroit's Arts and Entertainment Channel, and detroitiptv. Short clips and full sets kept fans coming back for more.
Music filled the air at Cadillac Square and Hart Plaza. The Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State added its own special touch. True to its roots, every note played stayed free for all to hear.
Fresh stats rolled in on Tuesday, October 7. The numbers tell a clear story - this Michigan music tradition now rings out across the globe, while keeping its heart in Detroit.
