Starting October 7, 2025, Detroit must switch to 10-digit dialing. The change comes as phone companies add a new 679 area code next month. With 313 numbers running short, Michigan officials had to act.

The 679 code starts November 7. It will serve Detroit and nearby cities including Allen Park, Dearborn, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Inkster.

Current phone users won't lose their 313 numbers. The switch won't affect call costs, according to state officials.

Officials set a six-month window for the transition. After Oct. 7, seven-digit calls stop working. Check your saved contacts, business cards, and phone systems now. Make sure they're ready for the big switch.

Experts predict the existing 313 numbers will last until late 2027. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator made this forecast after careful study.

This marks the third split from the original 313 zone. First came 810 in 1993, serving areas like Flint and Port Huron. Then 734 arrived in 1997, covering areas such as Livonia and Ann Arbor. Each change shaped how locals connect.

The story of 313 started in 1947. It stuck so well that Detroit now throws a city-wide party each March 13, known as 313 Day. The numbers became part of the city's identity.

Back in 2001, Michigan first approved adding a new code but waited. When a 2023 study showed 313 numbers would run dry by late 2025, they couldn't wait any longer.

Looking ahead, 679 should meet the area's needs until 2071. That's nearly half a century of new numbers for future Detroiters.
