A new protective vest will shield Scout, Woodhaven's latest police dog, from bullets and knife attacks. The gear comes from Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc., who made the gift to honor K-9 Sage of Cadillac, Michigan, who died July 10, 2025.

The custom-made vest will take about 10 weeks to arrive. Built to strict National Institute of Justice standards, it will give Scout vital protection during risky police work.

Of K-9 Scout, Detective Lt. David Toler said, "K-9 Scout is our newest K-9 and he is handled by Officer Cameron Poslaiko. They recently became certified as a team approximately two months ago.  He is trained in narcotics and tracking," according to The News-Herald

Scout stepped in when K-9 Nova left the force after two years. The vest will carry these words: "In memory of K-9 Sage, Cadillac, MI. EOW 7/10/25."

Meyer Veterinary Clinic wrote about Sage after his death. "Sage was more than just a dog — he was a partner, a protector, and a symbol of loyalty and service. He spent his working years keeping our community safe, and in retirement, he continued to touch lives with his gentle spirit and unshakable devotion."

The group behind Scout's vest helps shield police dogs across America. They've sent out 6,225 vests worth $6.9 million to dogs in every state.

Any active U.S. police dog with proper papers can ask for a vest. Old vests get swapped for new ones when needed. These brave dogs - about 30,000 of them - work hard to keep streets safe nationwide.
