You've waited for those two words all winter long: Play Ball! Friday, April 4, marks the Detroit Tigers home opener at Comerica Park against the Chicago White Sox. Although the Tigers began the 2025 baseball season on the West Coast, their first game in Detroit — Opening Day — is a much-anticipated tradition.

Writing in an editorial for 7 News WXYZ-TV Detroit, Regional Vice President and General Manager Mike Murri called Opening Day an “unofficial holiday” in Detroit.

“Downtown will be a sea of people dressed in navy blue and orange. The day will mark the return of spring and Major League Baseball,” he said. “No matter where you're from, Opening Day brings together family, friends, and strangers like few events. The goal is simple; have a fun time and cheer for our Tigers.”

Throughout the day, Detroit will host several tailgate parties across the city. Downtown bars and dining establishments will be filled, and fans at Comerica Park will experience the camaraderie that comes through a shared love for the Tigers.

Expectations are running high for the team this year. In 2024, the Tigers successfully entered the MLB Playoffs and won their first postseason series of games since 2013. The 2024 Tigers will be celebrated for their incredible 31-11 late season run that enabled them to secure a wild-card spot in the playoffs.

In concluding his editorial, Murri added, “The team has greatly contributed to Detroit's economy and excitement. Visitors from near and far are attracted to the city because of the success of our professional sports teams. So, if you haven't experienced the revitalization of Detroit recently, Opening Day is a perfect time to explore Michigan's largest city and wave your Tigers rally towel!”
