Heartland Forward's report assessed more than 350 metropolitan areas across the country, considering factors such as post-pandemic economic recovery, talent attraction and development for college graduates, and job innovation.
In the Heartland Forward rankings, Ann Arbor stood out among similar small-to-medium cities in America for its focus on promoting knowledge capital. Ann Arbor secured second place for career opportunities and third for attracting interest from college graduates.
Writing for Heartland Forward, research fellow Richard Florida highlighted Ann Arbor's strength as a heartland college town with its premier research facilities at The University of Michigan. To that end, Florida argues that college towns go beyond places of education to support knowledge capital. He encourages policymakers to focus on workforce development efforts that leverage access to innovation.
