Spread Eagle Plays The Token Lounge Sunday
Ray West and his band Spread Eagle are coming to play the Token Lounge this weekend, but first, he spoke with me about all things related to S.E.
Spread Eagle’s History
The band’s formation dates back to the late 1980s and early 90s. After releasing two solid albums, the members went separate ways until Rob De Luca (bass) and Ray reformed and released 2019’s Subway To The Stars.
We talked about their performance on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise. Ray loved his boat experience and enjoyed playing for the fans.
Spread Eagle Playing Europen Dates
We also talked about playing Europe. “We never got to go and work the U.K. and Europe.” He loved it and had great energy. “It’s just the whole vibe of being over there.” They’ll head back again this fall.
Rob plays in many projects, but his heart is in Spread. “He wants to have his own signature, his own D.N.A., out there, ya know, so that’s how Spread Eagle comes into the mix.”
Yes, there is new music the guys are working on. “This is a writing band.” He said the guys are always creating “It never stops.”
We also talked about the differences between the first and second albums. “The energy on the first album was raw.” He said they matured in writing for the second record but also had people in their space. “Do you want to sell a 150,000 or a million? The messes with your head.” He said the raw energy fell off, but he’s still very proud of the album. “With Open To The Public, you must play it a few times.” He said, “That record has a great groove to it.” That is true!
Ray Singing With Lynch Mob
Ray sang twice with George Lynch’s project, Lynch Mob. One of those gigs was here in Detroit at Uncle Sam Jam. That would end up being the final show he’d play with George. Ray says he doesn’t regret the decision to give it a try. “That was the start of me going. Let me take a step back.” He said he wanted to show people he was a better singer than what he showed in those two shows. “I worked hard at being a better singer/performer than I did two years ago.” He went on, “Ya know what. It was a wake-up call. I’m glad I had the experience. I’m sad that it was such a public failure on my part. I’m much better when I’m in a vibe of something.” He said he had a crisis of confidence before that but feels he’s come a long way since then. “I love singing Spread Eagle Music.” He said he’d rather sing his songs than someone else’s.
You can see the band at the Token Lounge on Sunday, August 25th. Click here for tickets.
