It’s with a heavy heart to share that Wayne Kramer, the guitarist of the influential Detroit band MC5, has passed away. He was 75-years old.
No cause of death has been reported, and this is a developing story.
RIP Wayne Kramer
The news was first shared on his Instagram page. You can see the post below.
It’s difficult to discuss Detroit bands without talking about MC5. We’ve got Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Jack White, and MC5. Yes, there are many others. However, the list is never complete without mentioning his name.
Wayne Kramer was born Wayne Kambes. He formed the band MC5 as a teenager, along with his buddy Fred “Sonic” Smith. As we know, the name was short for Motor City 5. The group was known for their powerful live performances. They were never afraid to take a stand.
The band was constantly fighting the power and sticking it to the man. Over the years, they had been banned on the radio and often had trouble with the government over their militant political stance. Rock and roll at it finest.
However, Kramer wasn’t just a big deal here in Detroit. He was known and respected all over the country, and all over the world. Rolling Stone even named him one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” That’s a major accomplishment. Rolling Stone definitely got that right.
At one time, MC5 was the designated “House Band” at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. From 1969 to 1971, they dropped three records: Kick Out The Jams, Back in the USA, and High Time. After MC5, Kramer continued on a solo career releasing five solo albums.
Wayne Kramer will be missed. He influenced so many people and artists all over the world, and especially here in Detroit. His legacy will not be forgotten. You can check out some of his work below shared on YouTube.
14 Things That Happened in Rock in 2023 You Forgot About
With Christmas officially in the rearview, it’s time to sit back, relax and look back on the year that was. Even briefly looking back at 2023, we must say this year was kind of a weird, chaotic one.
This fun, whimsical list isn’t meant for recapping earth-shattering things. Oh, no…this list is meant for the leftfield things that seemed to happen for truly no reason whatsoever. Again, 2023 was far more random than any of us realize until you actually sit and think about it. We cannot stress this enough!
Before moving forward, we would like to make one thing clear: This list isn’t about looking back and saying, “Hey, do you remember that (insert celebrity here) died in 2023?” Sadly, we have a whole separate list just about notable celebrity deaths in 2023. While 2023 was whimsically unique, it was also pretty brutal. Many true icons and legends sadly left us.
A lot of strange things happened, as you’ll see in the list below. We saw country stars dabbling in rock, and in the process, showing that they were much cooler than we thought. We had rock stars sharing some very personal things, like confirming they’re on the dating apps and even a story about a notable rock star almost soiling themselves while shopping.
On top of all of that, we saw one notable figure in rock have a fall from grace that was equal parts shocking and laughable. Plus, there were unexpected and welcomed returns, both at festivals and during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony.
Without further ado, here are 14 things that happened in the rock world in 2023 that you may have forgotten about. Repeat: This year was friggin’ weird! That being said, enjoy this trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping 2024 is just as random. It just makes life more interesting.
Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
