Sum 41 Embark On Final Tour, Stop In Detroit This September
Sum 41 are hanging it up, but not before hitting the stage in Detroit one last time.
The band made the “retirement” announcement back in May of 2023. Frontman Deryck Whibley took the time to talk with us about the upcoming album, tour and plans for the future. Watch the interview below. The new album Heaven :x: Hell is due out on March 29th. Sum 41 will have already embarked on their final world tour. There are two stops in Michigan. Sum 41 will play Grand Rapids and Detroit dates in 2024.

Sum 41 have been rocking our pop punk hearts for nearly three decades. It’s quite the accomplishment for any band, and they’re not denying the ups and downs they’ve been through. As a huge fan of Sum 41 (and I may have fangirled a bit while talking to him), I have to admit I was sad when I heard the news. Whibley admits the announcement came as a shock to many, but he was also shocked at the reaction from fans across the world. Fans who felt like I did. Fans who didn’t understand.
When asked what the future holds, he doesn’t know. Right now the main focus is having one hell of a time on the final tour. Sum 41 will play the Masonic in Detroit on September 14th. Deryck doesn’t expect to change his mind once things wrap up, but the fan in me says ‘never say never!’
The forthcoming album, Heaven :x: Hell was completed prior to the decision to call it quits. It’s a double album that represents both sides of Sum 41; pop punk and metal. The first single off the “Heaven” record is titled ‘Landmines‘ and reflects back on the beginning of Sum 41. The music video takes us back to their prom in 1998. The first single from the “Hell” record is ‘Rise Up‘ and features none other than Noodles of the Offspring!
At the end of the day, I’m super excited to see Sum 41 kick ass here in Detroit on their final tour. I’m also super pumped for Deryck and the band and whatever they all have in store for the future. Check out the interview below!
12 Albums That Turn 20 in 2024
Many albums that turn 20 in 2024 still sound as fresh today as when they were first released two decades ago.
In 2004, rock fans saw some of their favorite bands take significant risks. Frankly, you can’t talk about this year without talking about Green Day. Their seventh studio album, American Idiot, was an absolute triumph, and it helped solidify the band as one of the best bands of their generation. American Idiot was a critical and commercial success. Not only has it sold over 16 million copies worldwide. On top of that, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, with “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” also winning the Grammy for Record of the Year.
The early aughts saw a new resurgence of the “supergroup.” One of the best to emerge during that time was Velvet Revolver. The band was fronted by Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland. Completing the lineup was rhythm guitarist Dave Kushner and notable Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. Their debut album, Contraband, would go double platinum in the United States.
The alt. rock world saw three notable debuts in 2004. Arcade Fire released Funeral, while Franz Ferdinand dropped their self-titled LP. The biggest release, however, came from The Killers. Their debut album, Hot Fuss, was released in June, and it features “Somebody Told Me,” “Smile Like You Mean It,” “All These Things That I’ve Done” and “Mr. Brightside.”
The latter track is so ubiquitous that a Dec. 2023 piece published by The New York Times stated, “If boomers gave the masses ‘Don’t Stop Believin’,’ millennials can claim ‘Mr. Brightside’ as the generation’s official entry into that canon: a song that gets everybody at the bar shout-singing along.

Jade was born and raised in Detroit Rock City and grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, The Who, Tom Petty, etc. In high school she tried multiple different styles from cheerleader to goth but couldn’t do gymnastics and couldn’t get her eyeliner dark enough. She settled on jeans and a t-shirt, playing sports and making normal situations overly awkward. When she’s not making bad jokes on the radio you can find her shanking golf balls into the woods on the golf course and drinking beers at the bar. She has a strict two shot limit when it comes to tequila. Jade enjoys writing and talking about everything happening in Detroit Rock City, our Detroit sports teams, golf, and her fear of robots.
