Within your city, I'm sure you know some neighborhoods that are better than others when it comes to Trick-or-Treating. Similarly, some states do it better than other states. Then, some cities do it better than other cities within the same state on Halloween. However, you don't have to look very far to find one of the best cities in the country for Trick-or-Treaters. A city in Michigan has been named one of the 5 best in the country for Trick-or-Treating!

This week, WalletHub released findings that Detroit was actually one of the worst cities in the country for Halloween. So, we can take it off the list. We know it's not Detroit. So, which Michigan city could it be? It's probably not one you'd expect!

Growing up, I lived in a great subdivision for Trick-or-Treating. Our sub was a circle. It was super easy to navigate, we knew all the neighbors, and they gave out King Sized candy bars. That's extra bonus points. Our neighborhood was known around Clarkston for giving out great candy. So much so, that some of my friends would have their parents drive them over to our subdivision and drop them off there because their own neighborhood didn't dish out the good stuff. That's common.

What's maybe not as common as going one subdivision over, is going to a completely different town. If you live in Royal Oak, going up to a neighborhood in Clarkston probably isn't the best idea. You can find a better street to go to closer to your home. Even if one city is known for doing better on average. What even goes into one city being better than another for Halloween? "Better" is a very subjective term, so how do we identify it? Great questions.

Which Michigan City Is Best For Trick-or-Treating?

Some cities may have a history tied to spooky historical connections. Off the top of my head, I would imagine Salem, Michigan would be a go-to spot for Halloween. Salem, Massachusetts is one of the most well-known spooky places in the country because of its history of Witches and Witchcraft. However, Michigan's Salem doesn't have that same history but it does share a name. Other factors could include walkability, number of houses, and amount of candy they give out.

So, what was the Michigan city that was named one of the best in the country for Trick-or-Treating? It's Romeo! Bet you didn't guess that. According to BobVilla.com, Tillson Street goes all out to celebrate Halloween. There are tons of outstanding decorations on display the final two weeks of October, and then on Halloween they maximize the Trick-or-Treating experience. Roads are shut down and tens of thousands of pieces of candy are dished out annually. If you've never been, make this the year!

What Are The Best Cities For Trick-or-Treaters?

According to BobVila.com, Anoka, Minnesota is the best city in the country for Trick-or-Treating. I would have guessed Salem, MA would be number one. Not a city in frigid Minnesota. I imagine the temperatures aren't kind up there in late October. However, according to BobVila.com, Anoka is the self-proclaimed "Halloween Capital of the World." The town is very dedicated to Halloween. They even have a 5K "Gray Ghost Run."

Savannah, Georgia is another city that has long been known as one of the most haunted cities in the country. There's the Hamilton-Turner Inn, Laura's Cottage, the Marshall House, 17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant, and more are said to be haunted, according to BobVilla.com. During October, thy have Halloween-themed bar crawls, haunted houses, and you can trick-or-treat through Savannah's iconic historic district. Pretty cool!

Salem, Massachusetts and St. Helens, Oregon are two other cities with ties to Halloween. Salem is the famous Witch City, home of the Witch Trials back in the late 1600s. It's also where many horror movies are set, including the fan favorite, Hocus Pocus. St. Helens also has ties to a famous movie. Do you know which one? The answer is Disney's 1998 hit, "Halloweentown!" The movie is actually celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and they've got all sorts of fun planned, according to BobVila.com.

Other honorable mentions include: Sleepy Hollow, NY; Philadelphia, PA; and San Jose, CA. I'm proud that Michigan has one of the best cities in the country for Trick-or-Treating. 5 Fantastic Horror Flicks With Detroit Connections

If you know me, you know I love horror movies. It's my absolute favorite genre. While I love to watch scary movies all year round, there's no arguing they're always better to watch during the month of October. Especially here in Detroit, where we get the perfect fall weather during October. Plus, my first ever airshift on WRIF was Halloween night, 1995. Metro Detroit is a great place to be for Halloween and has a lot of connections to horror movies. Did you know that several fantastic horror flicks have been filmed here in Detroit?

While talking with some coworkers the other day, the topic of horror films came up. My friend, Cort, asked about ones made here in Detroit, or with Detroit connections.

Many movies have been either filmed in Metro-Detroit or have been set in Detroit. It seems like most of them, at least lately, have been in the horror genre. Driving around parts of Detroit, it's easy to see why film directors and producers choose to film here. They can get everything they want for a quality horror film.

Made In Michigan

Like I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of great reasons to choose to film your horror movie in Detroit. You have that perfect Fall weather and colors that you can't really get in Los Angeles. There are rundown neighborhoods around the city that will go well with the tone of a horror movie. Additionally, Detroiters are passionate about our community and horror movies alike.

I've found five fantastic horror flicks that have been filmed here in Detroit. Many of them are recent movies, but some classics have Michigan ties, as well. However, not every movie filmed in Detroit has been a horror movie. Movies like 8 Mile, Four Brothers, and Gran Torino were all filmed in Detroit, among others. Hopefully, we'll soon see even more movies filmed here in Detroit, or Michigan, as lawmakers have introduced new film incentives for the state.

Before we get to the list, do you think you can name five horror movies that were filmed here in Detroit? Take a second to think about it. No Google'ing! That's breaking the rules. Think on it. Okay. Are you ready? Let's get to the list. Here are five horror flicks filmed here in Detroit! I suggest you watch these during the month of October for the best results. Maybe even on Halloween night...if you dare.

5 Fantastic Horror Movies Filmed In Detroit

It Follows

I think I watched this one for the first time during the pandemic. I believe my stepdaughter told me about it. We both share a love of this kind of stuff, so we keep each other informed.

Barbarian

This movie is killer! It takes place in Brightmoor, just outside of Detroit. I was as surprised as anyone in the theater when the girl looked at her phone and Motor City Casino popped up. Really good horror movie!

Don't Breathe

This one takes place in a dilapidated area of Detroit. This movie will fill you with anxiety for sure. Just watching the trailer brought me back to the theater where I watched it. Crazy movie!

The Evil Dead

This is one I need to revisit. It was written by Royal Oak native Sam Raimi and was supposed to take place here until he decided to move it to rural Tennessee. Of course, it spawned a whole series of Evil Dead movies. The latest, Evil Dead Rise, is one of the top horror movies of the year in my opinion.

Scream 4

After watching the latest Scream, it reminded me why I stopped watching this franchise. I'm not a huge fan. I remember when they were filming this one in downtown Plymouth. Just watch the trailer to see how many local areas, or people you recognize.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
