Rams Wanted to Renegotiate Matthew Stafford Contract, ‘Frustrated’ He Said No – Report
After the Rams won the Super Bowl, they shelved over a lot of money to Matthew Stafford to keep him with the team. Now, they think it was too much money. The Rams gave the former Detroit Lions and current Rams quarterback a huge deal that included $63 million fully guaranteed at signing and another $57 million that was fully guaranteed in March 2023. As the story goes, Stafford didn’t even play much last year, and many think he’s on his way to retirement. Here’s the scoop on the Rams wanting to renegotiate Matthew Stafford and his contract deal.
According to NBC Sports, even though the Rams weren’t shopping Stafford, they were hoping someone would call them and ask them for a trade. They apparently wanted to Jets to take Stafford, but they went with Aaron Rodgers.
Rams Wanted to Renegotiate Matthew Stafford Contract, ‘Frustrated’ He Said No – Report:
With Stafford still in the fold, now it appears that the Rams wanted to redo Stafford’s contract and give him less money. Earlier this week, Colin Cowherd said during his show on FS1 and Fox Sports Radio that the Rams tried to get Stafford to renegotiate his contract. Stafford said no. “I was told by a source I trust that they wanted to re-do his contract,” Cowherd said, via USA Today. “He wasn’t interested. It limits what they can do and they were frustrated with him.” It’s unclear from the article whether the Rams were looking for a simple restructuring or a reduction in cash. Presumably, given that Stafford refused to do it, the Rams wanted him to take less money.
