There’s something special about our local and independently owned grocery stores in a world full of massive supermarket chains. While supermarkets offer convenience and variety, some prefer independently owned stores’ charm.

Neighborhood grocery stores offer a more personalized service. Unlike large supermarket chains, where customers often feel like mere numbers in a transaction, local stores tend to prioritize building relationships with their customers. Store owners and employees often greet customers by name, provide recommendations based on their preferences, and offer a more tailored shopping experience.

Oftentimes, these stores are more likely to source their products from local farmers, artisans, and small-scale producers. By supporting these local suppliers, they contribute to the community’s economic sustainability. Supermarket chains may divert profits to corporate headquarters or shareholders elsewhere. Local stores tend to reinvest their earnings into the local economy. This reinvestment supports job creation, local businesses, and overall economic growth.

LoveFood compiled a list of the best independent grocery stores in every state. Their selections were based on user reviews, awards and accolades, and the first-hand experience of their team. In Michigan, they named a store that they called a wholesome family-owned grocery store the best in the entire state. Right in the heart of Grand Rapids, Kingma’s Market snagged the top spot, earning the title of the best grocery store in the mitten.

The website made sure to highlight the features of Kingma’s Market. They’re all about supporting local and stocking up on fresh produce. They also mentioned the variety of alcohol they offer, with over 500 beers and 800 wines. On top of that, the website raved about Kingma’s Market’s range of health foods. “They offer health foods such as tempeh (a meat substitute made from soy), sausages, kombucha and miso paste, baking supplies, and a large selection of beautiful plants,” the website wrote.
