Who Is Billy Corgan Of The Smashing Pumpkins Biggest Competition Now?
Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is my latest Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown podcast guest. While we discussed many topics, one thing stuck out to me. In a recent interview, Billy had said how he lost his biggest competitor when Kurt Cobain from Nirvana died. I thought that was an usual statement, since they’re in bands and I’d never really heard any musicians talk like that.
I asked him about that comment and who he considers his biggest competition now. He had a very interesting answer. “Well, if you’re looking at Gen X, I mean, Dave Grohl really won the race. That says a lot about Nirvana. Not only did you have Kurt in the band, but you had Dave who, of course, contributed to so many great songs, then went on to make so many great songs of his own.” Billy went to speak to the tragedy then Foo Fighters have gone through with the passing of drummer, Taylor Hawkins.
He added that his biggest competition now, is himself. “At this point, I mean, I have a wonderful life. I’ve been very, very, blessed. I’m blessed with a beautiful family. Music for me at this time is a choice. Like, I don’t have to do music. I’m not saying that as a snob, I’m saying that like I really, really want to do music. So, I really have to want to do it to do it at a high level.”
