Michigan Has a Shocking Punishment for Unmarried Couples Living Together
It’s actually illegal in Michigan for unmarried couples to live together. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s pretty shocking. I mean, I know of countless people who have done it. I, personally, have never lived with a boyfriend, but that’s mainly because I’m an only child and need my alone time.
Anyway, back to the point of this story. It’s illegal to live with your significant other in Michigan if you aren’t married. This law was first passed in 1931, and it’s still active today. Technically, it’s a misdemeanor for unmarried couples to cohabitate. I can’t make this stuff up, kids. Read on for the scoop.
Michigan Unmarried Couples: The Punishment
As for the penalty for unmarried couples who live together, Section 750.335 of the Michigan Penal Code states, “Any man or woman, not being married to each other, who lewdly and lasciviously associates and cohabits together, and any man or woman, married or unmarried, who is guilty of open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior, is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year, or a fine of not more than $1,000.00.”
Yes, that means you could actually go to jail for a year for living with your guy or gal. But, if you want this law reversed, you have hope. Last month, the Michigan State Senate voted to approve Senate Bill 56. It wasn’t without opposition, as some lawmakers fought hard to keep the bill in place. which drew national attention. The bill’s goal is to repeal the archaic law. The State House will see the bill this month and vote on whether to approve it.
