Midnight Metal

Friday 12:00 a.m. Midnight

Metallica is appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! all this week in the lead-up to the release of their new album 72 SeasonsLast night (April 10), the band sat down for an interview covering a variety of topics. Among them was their recent purchase of a vinyl pressing plant.

This led to Kimmel asking the band what was the first vinyl record they ever bought. Lars Ulrich recalled his Dad taking him to see Deep Purple in 1973 and then buying their fifth studio album Fireball.

Robert Trujillo then chimed in and said his first vinyl record he ever bought was Santana’s Abraxas. He then added, “Second album was Kool and the Gang featuring ‘Jungle Boogie.'” Both album answers received big cheers from the studio audience.

Then came time for Kirk Hammett to share his first vinyl record. The guitarist sheepishly said, “I don’t really want to say.” After being egged on to share, Hammett said, “Okay…it was the Partridge Family Christmas album!” His answer received a loud mix of laughter and cheers. Hammett noted of the album, “It came with a green cover and a red envelope that you took and opened it up, and it was a Christmas card signed by the Partridge Family.”

James Hetfield was the last to respond, and he said his first vinyl album was Lynyrd Skynyrd. Kimmel responded, “Well, that’s a safe one. You didn’t put it out there with the Partridge Family. That’s pretty strong.” (The full interview can be viewed here.)

72 Seasons comes out this Friday (April 14.) It’s available for pre-save here, while physical copies are available for pre-order at Metallica.com.
