Top 10 Michigan Cities At Risk Of Flooding

They say "April showers bring May flowers" and Michigan has indeed been seeing a lot of rain. The past few days have been like waking up in a never-ending loop of Twilight rain scenes. Some parts of Michigan are already underwater after seeing heavy rain. Several streets have been closed because of flooding in the area.

There's a possibility of severe thunderstorms through Michigan on Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, there may be isolated tornadoes in many areas of Michigan. In addition to severe thunderstorms, a Flood Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for a portion of southeast Michigan, including the Bay and Midland areas.

"There is potential for several rounds of showers and thunderstorms this evening through tonight which could result in rainfall totals of 1 to 1.5 inches," said the National Weather Service. "This combined with wet soils due to recent rainfalls over the last few days may lead to flooding across parts of the area." One of the areas to experience flooding will be Grand Rapids. They said the area has a "threat of severe storms today into Wednesday along with localized flooding."

As far as Metro Detroit, there will most likely be severe weather between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The area will experience tornadoes, large hail, damaging wind, and flooding.

In preparation for the storm, DTE Energy has already sent out trucks from the Storm Emergency Response Center in Redford.

The 2020 First National Flood Risk Assessment (FNFRA) estimated that 315,600 properties are at substantial risk of flooding in Michigan. Detroit has the greatest number of properties with a high risk of flooding. "The city of Detroit has the greatest number of properties at risk of flooding in the state with 39,700 currently at risk, or 10% of its total number of properties," said FNFRA. Meanwhile, smaller cities or municipalities in Michigan, with fewer properties, may have a greater total of properties at risk.
