Dumb Things I’ve Said To Celebrities – Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys
Sometimes stupid things come out of my mouth. Sometimes it has everything to do with the Jack Daniels that goes into it. Case and point, what I said to Dan from the Black Keys last year.
I went down to Nashville to see the first Kid Rock Comedy Jam at the world famous Ryman Auditorium. Since it was for his charity, I bought the tickets instead of asking for any. I met up with a friend from down there and we went to the show. First of all, the tickets said “obstructed view”. I thought “how obstructed can the view be?” Well, as it turns out, very. I was right behind a pillar! Oh, well….I just looked around it.

After the show we all went back to Kid Rock’s Big Honky Tonk and Steakhouse. I was told to make my way to the third floor. People from the comedy event started showing up shortly there after. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, comedian Big Jay Oakerson and other comics from the night. Along with Zac Brown (who I’ll write about in the future…LOL. He was great) Marcus King and Dan Auerbach. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even recognize Dan until Kid Rock introduced me. We made some small talk, and then I slipped up.

Zac Brown. This picture took me a couple tries. I’m glad Zac was there – and sober – to help me. That’s a story for next time.

Let’s go back a week or two. This was the middle of April. The week previous was opening day, and the Jack White concert. I love the album that he dropped on April 8th of last year. I was in total Jack White mode. As I was talking to Dan, who’s sort of in the same musical world as Jack, the words came out of my mouth that I’ll never forget. “So, you know Jack?” As soon as the word “Jack” slipped out of my face, I suddenly recalled that they didn’t care for each other very much. If there was ever a time for me to shove words back into my mouth, that was it. He looked at me and just said “No.” Then he kind of turned and the conversation was over.
As time went on, we talked again and I think he realized I screwed up and was just making conversation. I believe I made amends because he invited me into his Uber to go to the after, after party at Rock’s studio house.

All’s well that ends well, I suppose. Dan and I hung the rest of the night. I still cringe when I think of that story….yikes. I’ll be heading back down to Nashville in a couple weeks for the Comedy Jam 2.
