Michigan’s First Snowfall of the Season Just Happened
It’s only mid-October, but Michigan has already seen its first snowfall of the season. Thankfully, it’s not where I’m located, because I’m not even close to being ready to deal with the snow, cold and ice that is always a part of Michigan winters. Of course, there’s no fooling Mother Nature, and winter is inevitably on the way. Enjoy the final 60s and 70s temperatures in Michigan while they last.
According to the National Weather Service at Marquette, there was a reported trace of snowfall on Friday (Oct. 2) at Negaunee, southwest of Marquette. This wasn’t a measurable snowfall, however. Since it was reported as just a trace, that means it was just a dusting of the white stuff. “Since last evening, occasional snow showers have been occurring here at NWS Marquette, located about 7 miles west of the city of Marquette,” they stated on Twitter. View the tweet below. It actually looks like more than a dusting of snow to me!

It’s not just Marquette, either. The National Weather Service at Gaylord, which is is lower Michigan, shared a video of snow falling at their office last week. Check out that tweet below.

If you’re wondering what actually counts as the “cold season” in Michigan, According to WeatherSpark.com, “The cold season lasts for 3.2 months, from December 1 to March 7, with an average daily high temperature below 41°F. The coldest month of the year in Michigan Center is January, with an average low of 18°F and high of 31°F.” That actually sounds pretty doable, if the “cold season” only lasts just over three months. But who are we kidding. I’m still hoping for the warm weather to surprise everyone and last into late fall. A girl can dream, right?
