My Friend’s Sick Eddie Van Halen Guitar! – Meltdown
In my journeys over vacation, I found myself down in the Irish Hills area. One thing lead to another, and I ended up at my friend, Marty’s house. He’d told me about his guitars for a while, but now I wanted to see them.
The first one is from fellow Detroiter, and axe master extraordinaire, John 5. The Rob Zombie guitarist and solo artist has some pretty sweet guitars, but this one is really cool! 5 may be one of the greatest guitarists I’ve ever seen live. He’s that good!
Up next was an acoustic guitar from George Lynch from Dokken. This one is autographed too. Anyone who knows me knows ho much I love George’s first solo album after leaving Dokken. A ’90s masterpiece.
How about a B.B. King guitar? Yes, he’s got one of those too! How sweet is this?
Finally, the guitar I’d been waiting to see….an Eddie Van Halen guitar. This bad boy was stripped and used by EVH in an early 2000s tour, fresh with a cigarette burn on the head stock. This axe is so bad ass!
Just holding Eddie’s guitar in my hand was something special.
Speaking of guitars, I may write about another one I saw on vacation that one of my friends owns. Let’s just say it has an incredible story and is responsible for a monster southern rock song….I’ll leave it at that.

Van Halen: Their 30 Best Songs, Ranked
Eddie Van Halen was the most influential guitarist of our generation.
Of course, flashy, fleet-fingered guitarists were a dime a dozen in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Eddie was better than all of them, but he was more than that. A songwriter, a keyboardist, a studio wizard, ¼ of Van Halen’s four-part harmony team and a band leader that was able to guide VH through losing the most distinctive frontman of the ‘80s and led them to four chart-topping albums with Sammy Hagar.
Here, we take on the tough task of ranking their top 30 songs. (It was really, really tough to cut any of the songs on the first six albums from this list.)
Meltdown started on the mighty WRIF on the evening of Halloween, 1995. Technically, his first on-air shift was the morning of November 1st. Moving to the Motor City from Buffalo, N.Y., he has built a career and family. Over his almost three-decade stint at RIFF, he's had the privilege to work with some of the biggest personalities in Detroit radio history. He boasts of being just the second-afternoon drive jock in the station's illustrious 53-year history.
Along with his love for rock music and attending concerts, he's also an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast and hockey player. He plays year-round and manages to squeeze in a few charity games throughout the year. Meltdown writes about the Detroit Red Wings, rock music, and Detroit concert venues.
