A Michigan Catholic university is giving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy an honorary degree this May.

Siena Heights University has announced it will give the Ukrainian head an honorary doctorate of humane letters for his authority during the Russian invasion. The school was founded in Adrian by Catholic Dominican Sisters. The honorary degree will be given out during the May 7 and 8 commencement ceremonies.

“The suffering, anguish, death and separation that the people of Ukraine have experienced is unconscionable,” Siena Heights University President Sister Peg Albert said in a statement. “Through all of this, Zelenskyy has resolutely defended his country and forged forward to preserve his nation and all that it stands for. His heart-felt compassion and unwavering courage are not witnessed too often in our world today.”

Zelenskyy has been president of Ukraine since 2019. Many colleges across the U.S. are also giving him honorary degrees, including Bard College, Canisius College and Alvernia University.
