New Legislation Could Bring Hollywood to Michigan
If some Michigan lawmakers have their way, there will be new legislation to help bring back Michigan’s film industry. The legislation offers a two-tiered tax credit that gives incentives for Michigan-produced commercials, plus movie, television and streaming productions.
“For a few years, Michigan was the Hollywood of the Midwest, and during that time, many Michiganders were able to see some legendary films created in their own backyard,” Sen. Hollier D-Detroit said in a statement. “Not only are movies great marketing opportunities for promoting our state, but they also bring a lot of revenue to our small businesses and create jobs.”
More than 39 states currently offer film incentives. The bills were introduced by state Senators Adam Hollier D-Detroit and Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City, along with Representatives Kyra Bolden, D-Southfield, and Jack O’Malley, R-Lake Ann. The idea is that bringing back the film industry to Michigan will create more jobs and help Michigan’s economy.
The bill would create a base tax credit starting at 25% for in-state spending with an additional 5% awarded for the inclusion of a “filmed in Michigan” logo. For more information, go here.
