It’s been an honor to rock with you for the past 50 years, and we look forward to the next 50.

Let’s reflect on these key events and happenings in Detroit and around the world in the year 2009!

  • In April, the Pistons made it to the playoffs, but lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

  • Businessman and former Detroit Pistons star Dave Bing became the Mayor of Detroit.

  • In June, the Red Wings tried to defend their Stanley Cup title, but they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • In October, the Tigers ended the season with a 6–5 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

  • The Lions finished their season 2–14.

  • America was still dealing with the financial crisis and recession, which started in late 2007.

  • Russia shut off gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine.

  • In May, NASA launched the final space shuttle mission to the Hubble Telescope.

  • Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States.
