Popular former Tigers catcher Alex Avila plans to retire at the end of the 2021 MLB season.
The news was first reported by Maria Torres of The Athletic reports, and Avila confirmed the news said before a 3-0 victory over the Rockies over the weekend.
This year, Avila, 34, is playing in a part-time position with the Washington Nationals. Even though he's a Washington National now, most of his career was in Detroit. He played for the Tigers eight seasons and a total of 760 games.
During his time with the Tigers, Avila had 2,709 plate appearances, hit 77 home runs and 314 RBI.
Avila started with the Tigers, his first MLB team, in 2009. Throughout his career, he played with six different organizations. With the Tigers, he was an All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner in 2011 and played in the playoffs four years. He went to the World Series in 2012.
