WRIF first started broadcasting true rock ‘n’ roll to the Motor City on On Feb. 14, 1971, and we’ve never looked back!

It’s been an honor to rock with you for the past 50 years, and we look forward to the next 50.

Let’s remember these chief events and milestones in Detroit and around the world in the year 1994!

  • In April, the Pistons compiled a 20–62 record and finished seventh in the NBA’s Central Division.

  • In May, the Red Wings compiled a 46–30–8 record, finished first in the NHL Norris Division.

  • In August, the Tigers compiled a 53–62 record and finished fifth in American League East.

  • In December, the Lions compiled a 9–7 record and finished third in the NFC Central Division.

  • The 1994 FIFA World Cup had several games take place at the Pontiac Silverdome.

  • The 1994 Grammy for Record of the Year went to Whitney Houston & David Foster (producer) for “I Will Always Love You.”

  • The 1994 Grammy for Album of the Year went to Whitney Houston & Babyface, BeBe Winans, David Cole, David Foster, L.A. Reid, Narada Michael Walden, Robert Clivilles, Clive Davis (producers) for “The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album.”

  • Some of the most popular toys from 1994 included the G.I. Joe Hall of Fame Foot Locker, My Size Bride Barbie Doll, Patch Pizzazz and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Costumes.

  • Popular movies from 1994 included “The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Lion King (Disney),” “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Dumb & Dumber.”

  • Popular TV shows from 1994 included “The Jerry Springer Show,” “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” “Frasier,” “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The X-Files.”
