Detroit’s mass vaccination site will officially open Wednesday (March 24), but it got an early start. According to officials, more than 2,600 people had appointments to get their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine today.

So far, roughly 110,000 people have registered for a shot, according to officials.

The Ford Field clinic will be in operation from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Among those managing the facility will be the state with assistance from FEMA, Wayne County, the City of Detroit, Ford Field, Meijer, Henry Ford Health System, the Lions and the Protect Michigan Commission.

The Ford family is waiving the facility cost at a value of $1.4 million, according to Caleb Buhs, director of communications for the state Department of Management, Technology and Budget. Additional expenses, such as maintenance, will be taken care of by FEMA.

Immunizations will be free, and insurance will not be required or requested upon arrival to the clinic.

There are 22 federal vaccination sites in the U.S., including Ford Field.
