Heavy metal, once again, is shown to have potentially positive effects on your health, according to a new study.
The Turkey-based Vera Clinic ran a study, and in the findings published by Metal Sucks, it was found listening to metal can help decrease not only your blood pressure but your heart rate and your anxiety levels.
Metal Sucks notes that in the study containing over 1,500 volunteers ranging in ages of 18-65, each volunteer had to complete various tests while given a random playlist. The study tracked the volunteer’s heart rate and blood pressure during the tests. During the study, “Heavy metal was found to be the second most effective at reducing anxiety, with 89% of respondents reporting a decrease in their blood pressure and respondents’ heart rates dropping by an average of 18%.” The only other playlist to beat out metal was one containing ’80s pop songs.
This is yet another study showing the positive effects of listening to metal. In 2019, Nick Perham, a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Cardiff Metropolitan University, wrote an article for The Conversation laying out a number of positive effects heavy metal had on metalheads. Perham found that long-term fans of metal “were happier in their youth and better adjusted in middle age compared to their non-fan counterparts.” He also found that metal fans who were in an angry mood and then listened to metal had an increase in “positive emotions” that “suggests that listening to extreme music represents a healthy and functional way of processing anger.”
