Weekends

If Tiger King has taught us anything it’s that there is a ferocious appetite for news stories about people and animals acting badly and the wild happenstance of life. In that spirit each night during the 9 and 10 o’clock hour I enjoy playing a game with you, the listener, called Florida or Australia. The rules are simple: I’ll tell you about a news story on the air and you text or call in and tell me if you think the story happened in Florida or Australia.(because those two places seem to have a high concentration of craziness.) Here are tonight’s stories:

Naked man caught on CCTV showering in car wash

A young man filmed showering naked at a car wash on the Sunshine Coast left the owner thinking: "He's going to be in bed or in hospital." Geoff Bowen, from Parkland's Car and Dog Wash in Meridan Plains, arrived at work earlier this month to find a water gun left on the ground.

Florida to release wave of modified mosquitoes

Local officials in Florida have approved the release of 750 million mosquitoes that have been genetically modified to reduce local populations. The aim is to reduce the number of mosquitoes that carry diseases like dengue or the Zika virus. The green-lighting of a pilot project after years of debate drew a swift outcry from environmental groups, who warned of unintended consequences.

Be sure to tune in Monday through Friday nights at 9 and 10pm if you want to play along.
