I finished watching "Waco" last night. It was a pretty decent doc if you're looking for something reality based to watch. I never watched "Hell On Wheels" the first time around, and for whatever reason, I'm digging Westerns lately. That's the latest series I'm on.
The binge watching is going to be put on hold for this week as Fox Sports Detroit replays the Red Wings Stanley Cup wins starting tonight. 8pm, game 4 of the Philly series which broke the camels back and brought the Cup home to Hockeytown. What a great time to be in the city!
I told you guys in an earlier blog that I'd have hockey stories surrounding those players in this blog. Today, Steve Yzerman.
I was lucky enough to play with him a week after that Cup win in the Dave Coulier foundation game. Years later during the 04-05 lockout I'd get a few more chances to play with him at the Troy Sports Center, were the NHL guys played three days a week. We'd skate 4 on 4 and play up to 5, then start over again.

Brendan Shanahan and I at the Dave Coulier Foundation hockey game at the Joe.
I'll never forget one game we were playing. It was tied at 4 and Stevie sent me off on a breakaway. I proceeded to fire it wide. (no comments from the guys I play with) I went to the bench and he came off after me. I apologized for not ending the game. He responded "Don't worry, you'll have another chance.". I looked down the bench and there was like four NHL players ahead of me before I'd go out again. There was no way I'd "get another chance".
Sure enough, I get back on the ice and the game is still tied at 4. Stevie gets the puck and is parked behind the other teams net. I start skating in through the face-off circle, with my stick cocked, ready to shoot. He see's me and hesitates a little bit, then finally passes it to me. Chris Chelios put his stick in the passing lane but misses the puck. It's coming right to me for a shot. This is going to be awesome! A pass from Yzerman to win the game....whiff!!!! I missed the puck! To be honest there was a mass of guys in front of the net and I didn't want to hit any of them with the puck. Steve puts his arms up in the air and said "You missed that one, too!".
To his credit, he did tell me in the locker room that he shouldn't have hesitated and passed it right away. Of course he should have, but I wasn't going to tell him that. Hell, I was just happy they let me play.
I played with Stevie Y. three times that winter. Truthfully, his skill level was fading by this time, but every time he played, the level picked up. No one wanted to let the Captain down.
The RIFF of the day is the double assault of Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti. Great people and GREAT talents.
