Meltdown: Lockdown – Day 163
Welcome to Wednesday, February 87th. It just keeps going and going. Hopefully there’s a little light at the end of the tunnel….
I’ll be honest, and know this will be hard to believe, but I am throughly enjoying these replayed Stanley Cup Red Wing games on Fox Sports Detroit. Wow, is it fun to flashback! That 2002 team was amazing. There were times watching last night were every player on the ice for the Wings, is now in the hockey Hall of Fame. Crazy!
Today’s RIFF of the day is the pair of Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters. I’ve only met Dave once. People ask me all the time what he’s like and I can only say, when I met him, he’s exactly like you’d think he would be. Funny, unassuming and very welcoming. Just a nice guy.
It was October of 2009, the season home opener for the Red Wings. I had an interview scheduled with Dave and his bandmates in Them Crooked Vultures at the Book Cadillac. Ya know, Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age and some guy named John Paul Jones. I’m not really sure who he is, but anywho…we were in a conference room waiting for Dave. The room had a long table, and I was at the head of it with my back to the double doors. All of a sudden, the doors both spring open, to all of our surprise, and it’s Dave. It’s like he snuck up to the doors and wanted to scare us by flinging them open. He proclaimed “Hey, everyone…I’m Dave!”. That’s how he was, just a down to earth guy.
When the interview was done, we walked outside the hotel and there was a small group of autograph hounds. Not fans. These people knew where the guys were staying and wanted to get some stuff signed to sell. Dave was cool about it and made it clear that he would only sign one thing for each of them, and to pick it out.
Wrapped up a great week of guests on my Talkin’ Rock podcast. A couple highlights:
Greg Upchurch from 3 Doors Down talked about his quarantine song “Skin to Skin”, playing with Puddle of Mudd and Chris Cornell. Plus, being from Oklahoma he’s no stranger to the Tiger King.
The chat with David Ellefson from Megadeth was awesome! I even snagged former drummer, Chuck Behler, to surprise him. David said the next Megadeth album is “Next level”.
Friday I was lucky enough to speak with the legendary, David Coverdale of Whitesnake. He is ALWAYS fun to talk to. He spoke of the first time he played Detroit, the new “Rock” album dropping on June 19th, his very amusing Twitter account and possible retirement.
