Former Detroit Tigers star Justin Verlander and his wife, Kate Upton, are helping first-responders in Detroit in the battle against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Verlander and Upton announced via Instagram on Friday (April 17) that they are partnering with different organizations to donate the much-needed goods.

“@kateupton and I have been following the #COVID19 spread in Michigan and are heartbroken for Detroit, a city so close to our hearts,” Verlander said in Instagram. “With such deep ties to this amazing and resilient city we wanted to focus our efforts on supporting both the community and first responders. We’ve especially seen the impact on the Detroit Police Department and reached out to learn how we could help.”

The donations include:

  • 25,000 masks for the Detroit Police Department, via a partnership with Bella+Canvas.
  • Face shields for every police officer, paramedic and firefighter in Detroit, through donations via a partnership with Ford Motor Company.
  • Thermometers for Detroit police, via a partnership with B Strong.
  • A donation to Feed the Frontlines Detroit, which supports local restaurants and helps deliver meals to healthcare workers and first-responders.
