I have so many great Detroit memories from growing up, like my dad and pa taking me to see the Tigers or going to see events in the city.
But, when I think of my favorite Detroit "first," it's definitely my first Detroit concert.
That concert was the great Velvet Revolver at The State Theatre, before it was renamed The Fillmore. I'll never forget how completely excited I was to see one of my favorite vocalists, Scott Weiland, and at the time, that outweighed the fact members of Guns N' Roses were backing him. (Although that was cool, too.)
Silvertide opened. Remember those guys? They put on an incredible show with so much energy, and I was really hoping they would break big. I think they were a little ahead of their time, because they had a retro sound before it was "in" to have a retro sound.
Velvet Revolver was insanely good. I just stood there, memorized for the whole show. I remember songs like "Slither" and "Rest in Pieces" sounded perfect. It would be the first of many more Detroit concerts I would attend. What a great memory.
