As it turns out, Jay Weinberg had plenty of practice before becoming Slipknot’s drummer — not playing drums, but wearing a mask.

Weinberg has revealed he grew up playing hockey and has recently returned to the ice in his spare time — as a goalie, of course. “After we finished touring in support of our last record, a lot of people got hockey fever after the Predators made their Stanley Cup run,” he says. “So we started a team together called the East Side Hellhounds.” But the new venture left Weinberg with a decision to make. “I got my pads and basically had the mindset of, ‘All right, I play in a band where I wear a mask – I can’t not have my goalie mask be my Slipknot mask,'” he says. So Weinberg made a comprise. He hired an artist to come up with a goalie mask that’s more of an homage to his Slipknot mask, he says.

I recently spoke with @6degreeswithmm about my love for ice hockey, the similarities of being a drummer and a goaltender, the origin of this mask, and much more in between. Check it out via the link in my bio.
