A Dolphin in the Ocean Doing One Backflip After Another

Whale watchers in California’s Monterey Bay witnessed something very cool and very rare earlier this week.  A dolphin started doing one backflip after another.  They counted over 20 flips, and got several of them on video. It’s a Pacific white-sided dolphin, and they’re the only dolphin species in the Northern Hemisphere that do backflips.

A somersaulting Pacific White-sided Dolphin! A unique behavior that isn’t captured on camera very often. They are our only dolphin that does this behavior. (The Dusky Dolphin, a very similar cetacean found in the southern hemisphere, also does backwards somersaults). While on our all-day whale watching trip, we watched this individual repetitively flip, over 20 times in a row!
