A number of inmates at the all mens Valley State Prison are participating in a cosmetology course that started in 1996 when the prison only housed women. The 1,600 hour course includes training in manicures, pedicures, hair styling and facials. The inmates begin learning skills using mannequins before moving on to practicing on fellow inmates and even prison employees. Upon successful completion of the 1,600 hours of textbook and hands on training, inmates can take a written exam to obtain their California State Barbering and Cosmetology License.
