The Smithereens’ Pat DiNizio, who died last week at the age of 62, will be celebrated with a tribute concert next month in New Jersey.
The show, taking place January 13 at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, was initially to be a Little Steven’s Underground Garage concert by the Smithereens with Patti Smyth & Scandal; It’s now been rechristened Time And Time Again: A Celebration of the Life of Pat DiNizio and will feature the surviving Smithereens with guest singers, including Little Steven, Smyth and Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul.
Tickets sold out almost as soon as they went on sale Monday (December 18) and a portion of the proceeds will go towards establishing a Pat DiNizio Musical Performance Scholarship at the theater’s Performing Arts Academy. Contributions can be made to the scholarship via CountBasieTheatre.org.
In a statement Little Steven Van Zandt said that, “With the sudden, tragic passing of Pat DiNizio, I think it’s appropriate that we take this moment to pay tribute to him. I will be honored to sing a few of his songs with the band, and I’m asking any friends of mine if they can make themselves available for a song or two. We’ll see who’s around and announce them shortly.”
DiNizio died on December 12 from unspecified “medical issues” related to injuries suffered from recent falls.
