Recap of Tom Petty’s MusiCares Person of the Year Gala

Tom Petty was feted by friends and fellow musicians on Friday (February 10), as he was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year with a Grammy Week gala at the Los Angeles Convention Center. During a gracious acceptance speech (video below) Petty noted that, "Twenty years ago, I would have been too cynical to do this, but I'm 66 now...It's a great honor."

Petty, who's celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the debut album by his band the Heartbreakers this year, performed with the group at the event, playing "Waiting For Tonight" and "Don't Come Around Here No More" with the Bangles, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Insider" with Stevie Nicks, "I Won't Back Down" with Traveling Wilburys mate Jeff Lynne and George Harrison's son Dhani, and "Runnin' Down A Dream" with just the Heartbreakers.

Others playing Petty songs during the night included Don Henley, Foo Fighters, Randy Newman, Jackson Brown, Jakob Dylan, Cage The Elephant and more.

Petty was the 27th MusiCares Person of the Year, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said the gala raised $8.5 million for the charity, which helps musicians in need of medical and financial aid. Some past MusiCares galas have been released on home video, but there's no word yet about Petty's event.
