5 Must-Own Rock Albums Of 2016

Look…we can all agree that as a whole, 2016 wasn’t the best year, but there were some bright spots that came with all of the great music that was released.

A ranking of the best albums of the year is frankly too hard, and to us, it’s like asking a parent to pick their favorite child.  Instead, we opted to compile a list of five albums released in 2016 that every rock fan should own.  Enjoy!

Book of Shadows II
– Zakk Wylde

Wylde’s first solo release after 20 years (!), Book of Shadows II is an incredible mix of blues and country with a touch of soul that is nothing short of moving.

The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser - Rob Zombie

His first new album in three years, Zombie more than delivered on this album with the mouthful of a title, and it’s earworm of a first single (“Well, Everybody’s F*cking In A U.F.O.”)  With 12 tracks clocking in at 31:23, this certainly is one quick orgy.

The Stage – Avenged Sevenfold

The opposite of Zombie’s release, A7X’s epic The Stage is a nearly 75 minute monster and the band’s biggest creative and commercial risk to date.  Its surprise release was a first for any rock band, and the album’s sci-fi theme is something fans can get lost in even after the final track (the 15+ minute “Exist”) comes to an end. Kudos to the spoken word appearance by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The Boy Who Died Wolf – Highly Suspect

“The album as a whole is a musical roller coaster.  It combines many genres of music and really shows the range of Johnny Stevens and the band.”
-Jade Springart, WRIF

“The most solid record released this year.  The first track ‘My Name Is Human’ give an airy science fiction feel to the record without straying too far from what you’d come to expect on the band’s second record.”
-Chuck Bean, WRIF

Hardwired…The Self-Destruct – Metallica

If a rock albums of 2016 list doesn’t contain Metallica’s first new studio release in eight years, does it even exist?  Between the excitement of the band FINALLY ending their new album drought and the fact that promotionally speaking they were seemingly everywhere, it’s no wonder the album was so well received.

“These guys made a true Metallica record:  HEAVY with great songs.”
-Terrie Carr, WDHA

“They delivered a masterpiece harkening back to the Black Album days.  I mean, have you heard ‘Now That We’re Dead”?!”
-Chris Snyder, WRAT

“It has the familiar, heavy trash sound we all know and love, with thrown-in tidbits reminiscent of their back catalog.  If this isn’t somewhere in your top five rock albums of the year, we need to talk.”
-Gabby Canella, WDHA
